Salish Orca

BC FERRIES CORPORATION SELECTS EMCS ANTIFOULING FOR THE SALISH CLASS FERRY FLEET.

July 22nd, 2020: The NOXX HYD™ Antifouling System is manufactured by EMCS Industries Ltd. In 2016 EMCS purchased Hull Tender International Inc, a company based in Vancouver, BC. The original invention was known as the Hydrosonic Hull Tender Antifouling System and was invented in 1974 in Canada. The system was renamed to NOXX HYD™ as a tribute to its inventor Derek Knox who remains an integral part of EMCS Industries as part of the design team.

The Salish Class vessels were built at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdansk, Poland. All three vessels arrived in BC after a 10,440 nautical mile journey for each ship. The Salish Orca arrived in Canada in January 2017 and entered service on the Comox-Powell River route in May. The Salish Orca pictured below is the first ship outfitted with the new NOXX HYD™ Antifouling system.

The Salish Orca, Salish Eagle, and Salish Raven are recently the newest vessels to join the BC Ferries fleet. The new vessels will replace the Queen of Nanaimo and the now-retired Queen of Burnaby. These two vessels were built in 1965 and 1964, respectively, and will have served their communities for over 50 years at retirement.

The NOXX HYD™ Antifouling System compliments the BC Ferry Corporation’s goals of being exceptionally environmentally friendly. The NOXX HYD™ system is 100% non-toxic, uses very little energy and does NOT use ultrasound frequencies to combat fouling. This means the transient and resident Whales are not compromised. NOXX HYD™ is a one-of-a-kind hydrosonic solution.

BC Ferries is working hard to have as little effect on the ocean ecosystems as possible. The Salish Class vessels can run as dual-fuel on either natural gas or ultra-low Sulphur diesel. BC Ferries’ use of natural gas for the Salish Class vessels reduces an estimated 9,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. The NOXX HYD™ system choice further reduces the effects on the ocean ecosystem.

EMCS is honored to be chosen to provide the NOXX HYD™ system to protect these vessels in the future from marine fouling without harm to the environment.

Trevor Tasker, CEO of EMCS Industries Ltd says, “Our selection was based on our core values as a company and our objective of contributing to environmentally conscious system development. It is a big responsibility to protect these vessels, and we take our role very seriously.”
